New Mexico boasts of a historical background that is set apart from all the rest in the nation of the United States of America, one that has been created out of the rule and inhabitation of groups since many centuries back. Although history of New Mexico is known to the world as the one which came into existence after the arrival of the Spanish colonialists, much of it also encompasses the life, culture and background of the Native Americans or Indians who lived here much before the advent of colonialism.
This study of the history of New Mexico takes us back to the timeless era when the ancient inhabitants folsom Paleo-Indians lived here about ten thousand years ago.

With the coming of the Anasazi to the north western region of New Mexico around the Rio Grande, the Pueblo communities developed which were soon joined by the Athapascan tribes entering the southwest and creating the Apache and Navajo tribal groups, the latter still forming a part of the one of the largest population of Native Americans in the US.
The first Spaniard explorer who gave a name to New Mexico and brought it before the world was Vasquez de Coronado but the person who truly discovered the vastness and wilderness of the state was Don Juan de Oņate, who also formed the first colony on the face of the land, bringing a whole new turn in the history of New Mexico. The events hat followed saw the formation of the present day city Santa Fe in the year 1609, conversion of numerous Indians to Christianity and the establishment of the first church of North America at San Juan Pueblo in 1598 and soon numerous other ones. However, the oppression of the religion became intolerable for the natives, who rose in protest at the renowned Pueblo Revolt.
The Spanish too were determined to get hold of New Mexico and therefore, after a four year long strife with the natives, they eventually colonized the place, which was to remain under their rule for the next 125 years beginning 1692. This period of Spanish colonial brought about great commercial and economical as well as architectural development and soon numerous industries flourished with prosperity until the year 1821 when it claimed independence. Thereafter, as a consequence of a war by the US in the year 1846 New Mexico was added to the territory of the rest of the nation. What followed were a whirlwind of fascinating incidents related to the US Civil War and the World War II, where the state and its inhabitants played very crucial role.
The later half of the 20th century through the 21st century have brought over multitudes of changes in the technological, military as well as other industrial and agricultural sector of the state. But the numerous churches bearing the evidence of inexplicable architectural excellence dotting the state and the commercial and scenic trails still in existence stand testimony to the fantabulous past and as you follow the footsteps of those who lived yesterday in this enchanting land, you can easily trace down the rich and grand culture and history of New Mexico, waiting in patience to tell you the tales of a magical place.
