Geography of New Mexico

Located in the southwestern region of the US, the topography and geography of New Mexico is diverse and fascinating. It is sometimes believed that the land has been blessed by the nature, bestowing upon it the bounty of every aspect of natural phenomena. Home to innumerable natural forests, the greenery exuded by the state can be easily imagined, but all of these forests are the carefully preserved zones spreads hundreds of thousands of acres protected by the Federal Government of the US as National Forests. Some of the most important names amongst these are Carson National Forest, Cibola National Forest, Santa Fe National Forest and Cibola National Forest.

There are also other lands forming significant part of the geography of New Mexico which have been designated as the prestigious national monuments and national sites of tourist interests including the area of the Aztec Ruins, Capulin Volcano, Carlsbad Caverns, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail, El Malpais, Gila Cliff Dwellings, White Sands, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks, Valles Caldera National Preserve, Gila Wilderness, Delaware Basin and many more.

However, the primary demarcation and divisions in the geography of New Mexico are determined by the surrounding regions and states and the natural resources. As you look a map of the US, you will find that the state is bordered on the East by Oklahoma, a minor part of the east and most of the south by the US state of Texas, the southwestern by the states of Chihuahua and Sonora in Mexico, the north with Colorado and the west by the state of Arizona.



Besides the state boundaries, the topography and landscape consist of deserts which are a surprising color of rose, broken mesas as well as towering peaks draped in snow and green forests which add to the mysterious wilderness of the state. The rugged yet majestic look is rendered to New Mexico by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which lies on the eastern part of the city of Rio Grande and the arid appearance is accentuated by the vegetation that grow on the desert areas and semiarid plains such as cacti, creosote bush, desert grasses, yuccas and more.
