The Counties of New Mexico started meeting on a yearly basis in the year 1936 to attend to their apprehensions and work together on initiatives. The New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC) was formally included in the year 1968 which, till date serves as a voice on a state-basis for all the Counties in New Mexico. The New Mexico Association of Counties is a joint association of the elected employees and officials of the state. This association sustains and encourages the concept that all elected officials of the county must have the chance to team up for solving problems and collaborate for the development New Mexico county government.

The New Mexico Association of Counties achieves this by offering representation of legislature, general research work, coordination of court cases, support and training in improving and acquiring administrative methods and county government finances. The association offers insurance pools which cover the property and compensation of a worker as well liability and casualty insurance. The county officials working under the New Mexico Association of Counties are able to carry out their functionary duties with the support of the conferences and publications.
The policy body of the New Mexico Association of Counties is the Board of Directors which is comprised of the ex-officio members, officers and one member from each of the county. The Board of Directors elects officers on a yearly basis and meets all through the years, apart from getting together at conferences. Both the Multiline Pool and the Worker’s Compensation Pool elect one Board that meets every alternate month to carry out lapse responsibilities operating under respective Joint Powers Agreement. The Executive Director, who employs the staffs, is the only person responsible for dealing with the programs and policies of the Association. The Executive Committee operates on the Board of Directors’ behalf when so allowed. Sustaining members are vendor belonging to the private sector that find is advantageous to join and back the counties through the New Mexico Association of Counties. The Affiliates are part of the New Mexico Association of Counties that focus on particularized professional fields.
